Johnny Chang: A Longstanding Member of the Blackjack Team
The MIT Blackjack Team knew how to win. That’s how this group of bright college students managed to walk away from Vegas after years of team-play Blackjack with millions of dollars. The team had developed a carefully planned strategy that enabled them to count cards in a way that was undetectable by casino management.
But that strategy didn’t appear out of nowhere. It took years of practice and the sharpest minds in MIT to come up with a way to win. Johnny Chang, who is now recognized in the Blackjack Hall of Fame, was one man who was with the team from beginning to end.
Discovering the MIT Blackjack Team
When Johnny Chang arrived at MIT in the late 70’s, he quickly chose his major - electrical engineering, the most prestigious department in the university. At some time during his first year at MIT, Chang signed up for a special Independent Activities Period course on Blackjack Card Counting. At the time, Chang wasn’t particularly interested in taking up Blackjack as a regular pastime. The course was fun, but Chang was intent on his studies, and didn’t have the money to make casino card counting a reality.
Two years later, Chang was walking across campus when he noticed a sign advertising a spring break job that paid $300. Chang investigated the offer and found out about the MIT Blackjack Team - a group of students put together to implement card counting strategy and win casino Blackjack. Applicants who made it through a training course were given $300 to play Blackjack in Atlantic City during spring break.
At first, Johnny Chang did not enjoy unparalleled Blackjack success. But the manager of the team was not discouraged, and Chang was moved to a less important position while he practiced his counting skills. Soon enough, Chang was one of the leading players.
Chang Sets up Strategic Investments
Years later, after many years of successful team play, Chang teamed up with Bill Kaplan to create Strategic Investments - a new MIT team with a one million dollar bankroll. The partners also began recruiting more seriously and training players rigorously. It was after this transformation that the MIT team began to enjoy incredible financial success. A weekend in Vegas could earn the group as much as $500,000.
Unfortunately for the MIT team, the winning streak came to an end. Casino management began to understand the team strategy, and alerted employees to the players’ identities. In 1993, Chang and Kaplan decided to dissolve Strategic Investments.
The End of Blackjack for Johnny Chang?
For Johnny Chang, the end of the MIT Blackjack Team did not mean an end to his own personal Blackjack exploits. In 2005, he impressed attendees to the Annual Halloween Blackjack Ball with his ability to count down two decks of cards in a little over a half a minute. Then in 2007, Chang was inducted into the Blackjack Hall of Fame, earning his place amongst the great names in Blackjack history.
