Spotlight on Director of 21, Robert Luketic

Robert Luketic is a native-born Australian living in Los Angeles. This successful film director made the move to California after struggling to fulfill his dream of directing success in his hometown, Sydney. While Luketic did study in Australia at the Victorian College of Arts, and did produce his first award-winning short film in his home country, he soon found that the Australian world of film was difficult to penetrate. Fortunately for Luketic, the choice to try his luck in L.A. was a good one. Now, he’s a well known Hollywood director, with a growing repertoire of box office hits to his name.

His hit films have included peppy comedies like Legally Blonde, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton, and most recently, Monster-In-Law. These days, Luketic is working on a new and different project - a movie version of the book Bringing Down the House, by Ben Mezrich. This movie, called 21, reveals the true story of six MIT students who took Vegas for millions. 21 is slated to be released in March 2008.

Robert Luketic’s Techniques

So what filming techniques is Robert Luketic known for? Well, most of his movies feature inspiring amounts color and light. According to Luketic, as quoted in Box Office Mojo, “I like to use color to create heightened reality. Deep down, we all pine for romantic fantasy. We all want it to be reality.” And this affinity for an almost surreal amount of brightness certainly shines through in his movies. All of his films so far have been cheery and positive, establishing Luketic snugly in his chosen genre of comedy and romance.

The Movie 21: A New Direction for Luketic

Despite his experience in this genre, the decision to direct 21 is taking Luketic in a new direction. Unlike his previous films, 21 is a drama, not a comedy, but not surprisingly for Hollywood, there is a bit of romance involved. The film tells the dramatic tale of a group of MIT students who develop a system of Blackjack card counting that even the biggest casinos can’t seem to defeat. To give the movie some star appeal, Luketic cast actor Kevin Spacey as the math teacher who organizes the Blackjack Club, and actress Kate Bosworth as a member of the team and the main character’s love interest.

If Robert Luketic’s previous success is any indicator, 21 will be a film well worth seeing. Look for it in theaters this March.
